When you travel a lot and move often, it is nice, no, essential to have a few constants. Of course, the Love of my Life is my greatest constant.
But here is Anne Marie. She was a hand me down from my (much older) brother and I suspect she is from the fifties,though I have no clue about country or make. Not important at all, I have her as long as I can remember. No scouting camp, sleep over or move was without her.
Wanneer je veel reist en vaak verhuisd, is t prettig, nee, essentieel om een paar vaste punten te hebben. Natuurlijk, de Lief van mijn Leven is mijn belangrijkste vaste punt.
Maar hier is Anne Marie. Een tweede handsje van mijn (veel oudere) broer en ik denk zo dat ze van de jaren vijftig is. Geen idee van de maker maar dat is niet belangrijk. Ik heb haar zolang ik me kan herinneren. Geen padvinderij kamp, logeerpartij of verhuizing zonder haar.
Once her head came of during a summer holiday visit at my aunt. She taught me how to sew it back on myself, quite neat job although since then her head is tilted sideways. As I do not suffer from perfectionism and it emphasizes her listening qualities, I left it that way.
Here she poses between the morning glories during our first Canadian summer. I just knitted her new sweater and hat and made her a pair of blue velvet pants.
Tijdens een zomerse logeerpartij bij mijn tante, kwam haar hoofd los. Mijn tante leerde me hoe ik het zelf weer aan kon naaien. Best netjes gedaan maar sindsdien staat haar hoofd wel wat scheef. Aangezien ik niet lijdt aan perfectionisme en t haar luisterende houding benadrukt, heb ik t zo gelaten.
Hier poseert ze tussen de blauwe haagwinde tijdens onze eerste zomer in Canada. Ik had haar net een nieuw truitje gebreid met bijpassende muts en een blauw fluwelen broekje gemaakt.
But she pointed out that summers in Ohio are quite hot and desired a girlie dress. So I still had some of that beautiful silk yarn in pink and cream swirl and I took out the knitting needles again. Voila!
Maar ze wees me erop dat de zomers in Ohio nogal warm zijn en ze wilde graag een meisjesachtige jurk. Nou ik had nog steeds van dat mooie roze met crème, zijden garen en nam de breinaalden er maar eens bij. Voila!
But then Anne Marie expressed some anxiety about chilly bare bear shoulders (sorry, could not resist the pun…) and I made her a shawl as well. Nothing but the best for my best bear friend!
Anne Marie was wel bezorgd over koude schoudertjes nu, dus ik maakte ook nog maar een omslagdoekje. Alleen t beste voor mijn beste bere-vriendin!

Be still my heart, we are almost there!Just a few more days and we will move to our final destination, our new home.
Vol verwachting klopt mijn hart! Nog een paar dagen en dan gaan we verhuizen naar onze vaste bestemming, ons nieuwe huis.
Since we knew that our current home was temporary, we only unpacked the necessary things and a few personal items to create a pleasant nest. Most of these boxes have been packed for almost a year.
Omdat we wel wisten dat ons huidige huis maar tijdelijk was, hadden we alleen t noodzakelijke uitgepakt en wat persoonlijke spulletjes om een knus nest te maken.
Oh, I can hear our lovely stuff softly singing to me;o)
Oh, ik kan al onze heerlijke spulletjes al zachtjes horen zingen;o)
And because these photo’s are somewhat boring, I will ask Moddi to sing about his home again. Now our home is not as his at the sea but the feeling is the same: enjoy!
En omdat deze foto’s wel wat saai zijn, zal ik Moddi vragen om weer over zijn huis te zingen. Nu is ons huis niet aan zee als t zijne maar t gevoel is t zelfde: genieten maar!

Yesterday, we received the key to our new home. Woohoo! So the coming days will be spend with cleaning, hanging curtains, buying paints and other nice stuff. Time that is left, will be spend on the couch with one of these very good books from this photo.
Gisteren hebben we dan de sleutel ontvangen voor ons nieuwe huis. Joepie! Dus de komende dagen worden besteed aan schoonmaken, ophangen van gordijnen, t kopen van verf en andere leuke artikelen. De tijd die over is, wordt doorgebracht op de bank met t lezen van een van deze leuke boeken.

So I think I have covered all the thrift stores and antique markets close to home trying to find dining room chairs matching my Drexel Hutch. None what soever. However, shopping time was not spend in vain. Here is what I came home with.
Dus ik denk dat ik zo’n beetje alle kringloop winkels en antiek markten bij langs ben geweest om eetkamerstoelen te vinden die passen bij mijn Drexel buffetkast. Niks, noppes, nada. Gelukkig, de tijd besteed aan t winkelen was niet tevergeefs. Dit is waar ik mee thuis kwam.
A really nice print (for you country lovers out there, it is the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville), a cute syrup dispenser, a perfect teacup (another perfect…) almost real china rice bowls, a retro cook and handcrafting book.
Een erg leuke print (voor de country liefhebbers, het is de Ryman Auditorium in Nashville) een snoezig siroop kannetje, een perfecte theekop (weer een perfecte…) bijna echte rijstkommetjes, en een retro kook- en handwerkboek.
Oh dear, who can say no to such a jolly dachshund? The herd of dachshunds are very pleased with him!
Ach en wie kan er nu nee zeggen tegen zo’n lollige tekkel? De kudde tekkels waren wel blij met hem!
Than, oh joy, finally: a dress form for a reasonable price. Woohoo, it was on my ‘treasure hunting list’ for three years already. I have named her Sally and she is showing here my favorite Christmas dress.
En dan, oh jubel, eindelijk: een paspop voor een redelijke prijs. Joepie, dat stond al zo’n 3 jaar op mijn ‘kringloop’ lijst. Ik noem haar Sally en ze draagt hier mijn favoriete kerstjurk.

En de vintage jaren vijftig nepjuwelen die ik ook nog eens tegenkwam en deze Kerst zal dragen. He, een meisje moet vooruit plannen!

I confess , I am a bit of a lazy reader. I re-read books over and over and I like cozy reads. And really, nothing wrong with that! However, from time to time I need to be challenged. So I became a member of a wonderful book club at the local library. I have met these great women a few times now and I am ever so pleased with them and hopefully they with me;o)
This time, to my surprise, ‘Frankenstein’ was on the menu. Of course, I read it dutifully at high school and I guess most of us know the story about the eccentric scientist Victor Frankenstein, who creates a monster in an effort to recreate life, in a terrifying scientific experiment. He gets the scare of his lifetime and backs away. Only when the love of his life is murdered by the creature, he takes responsibility and decides to end what he has started by finding his creature and kill it.
I was actually surprised to find how well written the book is, the story is still captivating and genuinely scary and sad. I also was surprised to find, Mary Shelley was only 19 when she started to write ‘Frankenstein’ and how unusual her life actually was. Another ‘fun fact’, brought to my attention by my bookworm sons, ‘Frankenstein’ is considered the first science fiction novel due to the use of plausible but non existing technology that changes the characters and events of the story. Ha, I did not know that!
Ja ik beken, ik ben een beetje een luie leester. Ik her-lees boeken eindeloos and hou van gezellige, knusse boeken. Nouja, daar is helemaal niks mis mee! Maar zo nu en dan moet ik toch eens opgepord worden. Dus werd ik lid van de fantastische leesclub in de plaatselijke bieb. Ik heb deze geweldige vrouwen nu een paar keer ontmoet en ik ben in mijn nopjes met hun en hopelijk zij met mij;o)
Deze keer stond,tot mijn verrassing, ‘Frankenstein’ op t menu. Natuurlijk was t verplicht leesvoer op de middelbare school en ik denk dat iedereen t verhaal wel kent over de excentrieke wetenschapper Victor Frankenstein, die een monster creëert in een poging menselijk leven te scheppen, in een afschrikwekkend experiment. Hij wordt doodsbang en vlucht. Pas wanneer de liefde van zijn leven door t monster wordt gedood, neemt hij de verantwoordelijkheid op zich en beslist hij een einde te maken aan wat hij is begonnen door t wezen op te sporen en te doden.
Ik was eigenlijk verrast hoe goed t boek geschreven is, het verhaal is nog steeds intrigerend en erg griezelig en treurig. Ik was ook verrast te ontdekken dat Mary Shelley nog maar 19 was toen zij t boek begon te schrijven en hoe uitzonderlijk haar leven was. Een ander interessant feit, opgemerkt door boekenwurmen van zonen, is dat ‘Frankenstein’ wordt gezien als t eerste echte science fiction boek door t gebruik van aannemelijke maar niet bestaande technologie dat verandering brengt in de hoofdkarakters en wendingen in t verhaal teweeg brengt. Ha, dat wist ik niet!

I am not feeling to well and I am bit upset. When I was walking , I was attacked by two big mean dogs. The poor elderly lady who walked them did not know the dogs and was doing a neighbor a favor. The poor elderly lady almost came to fall! Luckily my dad rescued me and took me home whilst mom comforted the poor elderly lady who was crying and helped her to bring the two big mean dogs home.
Ik voel me niet zo lekker en ik ben wat overstuur. Toen ik ging wandelen, werd ik aangevallen door twee grote gemene honden. De arme oude dame die ze uitliet, kende de honden niet en ze deed t voor een buurvrouw. De arme oude dame kwam bijna te vallen! Gelukkig, baasje redde me en bracht me naar huis en vrouwtje troostte de arme oude dame die erg huilde en ze hielp haar om de twee grote gemene honden naar huis te brengen.
The two big mean dogs bit my tail and I was wounded. Mom is a nurse and she took care of it. Mom is good with panic and crisis but when all is calm again, then she gets the shakes.
De twee grote gemene honden hadden in mijn staart gebeten en ik was gewond. Vrouwtje is verpleegster en die verzorgde het. Vrouwtje is goed met paniek en crisis maar als alles weer kalm is dan krijgt zij de bibbers.
Dad is working at home so she put my bed in his office and she sat down there as well to calm down with her knitting, still muttering about irresponsible dog owners. Dad is a good listener.
Baasje werkt thuis dus sleepte vrouwtje mijn mand naar t kantoor en zij ging er ook zitten om te kalmeren met een breiwerkje, nog mopperend over onverantwoordelijke hondeneigenaren. Baasje kan goed luisteren.
I am going to sleep it of, I feel better already. Ha, all is well that ends well.
Ik ga maar eens lekker slapen, ik voel me al een stuk beter. Ha, eind goed, al goed!

Last weekend, we were invited to a spontaneous ‘get-together’ and go and see the US Air Force Band perform live in the Village of Evendale. It was an outdoors event, so we packed lawn chairs, blankets and picnics and of we went.
It was great! This band can play any kind of music: Jazz,R&B, Country and Rock. We had a great evening in wonderful company.
In the fall, these inspiring musicians are going to the Middle East and perform for the US troops, those brave man and women are in for something special!
Afgelopen weekend, kregen we een uitnodiging voor een spontaan avondje uit naar t live optreden van de US Air Force Band in the Village of Evendale. T was in de openlucht dus camping stoelen, dekens en picnics ingepakt en op pad.
T was geweldig! Deze band kan echt alles spelen: Jazz, R&B, Country and Rock. We had een super avondje uit in geweldig gezelschap.
In t najaar, gaan deze inspirerende muzikanten naar t Midden Oosten en optreden voor de Amerikaanse troepen, die dappere mannen en vrouwen staat wat speciaals te wachten!

Since my roommates are still pouting about my remarks on whine and cheese last Thursday, I decided for pizza night to win them over again!
Here a great gluten free recipe:
Pre heat oven to 400f and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
Mix all ingredients to a firm dough.
Dust countertop lightly with corn meal or rice flower. Roll your dough into a roll with a diameter of about 4inches. Cut in slices of about 1/2 inch thick ,should make about 10.
Bake for 10 to 12 minutes until golden brown.
Lower temp to 375F . Top the pizza’s how you like it and bake for another 5 to 7 minutes.
Ha, you see everybody happy again! I like mine with grilled zucchini and sharp goat cheese, with arugula lettuce on top. How do like yours?
Mijn huisgenoten pruilen nog steeds omdat ik ze zeurkousen heb genoemd afgelopen donderdag. Dus vanavond zal ik ze tegemoet komen en pizza op tafel zetten!
Hier een geweldig glutenvrij recept:
Verwarm de oven voor op 200 C and bedek twee bakplaten met bakpapier.
Mix alle ingrediënten tot een stevig deeg. Strooi wat rijstbloem of maismeel op t aanrechtblad en vorm t deeg tot rol met een doorsnee van 10 cm. Snij plakken van 2cm dik, je zult ongeveer 10 mini pizza’s krijgen.
Bak goudgeel in 10 tot 12 minuten.
Verlaag de temperatuur tot 175C. Bedek de pizza’s zoals jij t lekker vind en bak nog eens 5 tot 7 minuten.
Ha, iedereen weer blij! Ik vind de mijne lekker met gegrilde courgette en pitige geitenkaas en dan met wat arugula sla erover. Wat is jouw favoriet?
