The books

Ah, yes books, reading.
I grew up in a little village next door to a library (with the most fearful librarian ever). Already as a small girl I had a love for books and reading and I can safely say whenever the library was open, I was there too. The book I read was the world I lived in, whether it was Laura Wilder or Mary Poppins. I discovered dinosaurs, wild life and cook books. I recognized myself in the modern teenager books from the seventies and found that ever so helpful. Later I was happy to see these experiences passed on through my sons.
Despite my interest in languages and literature, I ended up becoming a RN and later on a Child Therapist. I was happy in both these professions however intense the work pressure could be.
After immigrating to Canada, I finally ended up working for the small libraries in the rural community of the township we lived in. I enjoyed every minute of it; working with people in a far less stressful situation, having the pleasure in helping patrons finding the right books whether for joy or more serious matters. For a fastidious person like me it was wonderful to admire rows of neatly shelved books, to carefully repair them or folding the crisp covers over brand new books and stamp them.
And of course, after our move to Ohio, one of the first things we did was visiting the local library. How delighted I am to find, it is a very good one!
What kind of reader am I? First of all, I am a devoted Jane Austen girl. I adore the way she draws me in to the story and makes me walk along with the heroine, her tong-in-cheek satire, the dialogues and the happy endings. I also love the passion and drama of the Bronte sisters. I can delight in the devious and clever crimes of Agatha Christie. Elizabeth Berg’s books always make me think” I feel exactly the same, only I didn’t know it until Elizabeth Berg wrote it”. When I need to relax and/or have a distinct need for tea and a book in front of the woodstove, Miss Buncle’s Book by D. E. Stevenson is one of my favorite choices.
However, I don’t like dark and depressing books, books full of horrible violence and lonely animals. Complicated philosophies with lots of complaints and intense moaning that makes me want to say: “Oh,grow up, get your act together, live with it or solve it, etc.’
What I also love and can completely indulge in, are books about cooking, gardening, knitting, home décor and antiques with beautiful photos. Just leaving through them, getting inspired, and being activated.
My plan is to alternate fiction and non-fiction books, short and simple. And of course I will start with Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons.
Oh, boeken en lezen…
Ik ben opgegroeid in een klein dorpje vlakbij de bibliotheek (met de meest ontzagwekkende bibliothecaresse!) Als klein meisje had ik al een liefde voor boeken en lezen en als de bieb open was, was ik er meestal ook wel.
Het boek dat ik las, was de wereld waarin ik leefde, of dat nu Laura Wilder of May Poppins was. Ik ontdekte dinosauriër-, natuur- en kookboeken. Ik herkende mezelf in de moderne tienerboeken uit de jaren zeventig en vond dat wel heel fijn.
Hoe gelukkig was ik te zien dat ik deze liefde voor boeken en lezen kon doorgeven aan mijn zonen.
Ondanks mijn liefde voor taal en literatuur, werd ik verpleegkundige en later BSM- therapeut. En hoe intens de werkdruk soms ook, ik was gelukkig in deze keuzes.
Na de emigratie naar Canada, belandde ik uiteindelijk als bibliotheek assistent in de locale dorpsbibliotheken. Hoe leuk ik dat vond! Werken met mensen zonder stress, het plezier in t helpen van t vinden van t juiste boek of t nu voor plezier, hobby of serieuze zaken was. Hoe heerlijk ik t vond om boeken netjes op volgorde en in rijen te zetten.Nieuwe boeken van een cellofaan omslag en stempels te voorzien.
En na onze verhuizing naar Ohio, was ik zo opgetogen om direct te ontdekken dat we weer gebruik kunnen maken van grote stadsbibliotheken.
Wat voor lezer ben ikzelf?
Ik ben een toegewijde Jane Austen lezer, ik vind t heerlijk om door haar in t verhaal getrokken te worden en mee te lopen met de heldin, het volgen van de dialogen, genieten van Engelse satirische humor en dan natuurlijk de gelukkige afloop!
Ik hou ook erg veel van de passie en drama van de Bronte zusters. Ik raak opgetogen van de slimme en slinkse misdaadverhalen van Agatha Christie. Als ik de boeken van Elizabeth Berg lees, denk ik vaak ” dat voel ik precies zo, maar ik wist t pas nu ik t hier lees.”
Wanneer ik eens moet ontspannen en een dringende behoefte heb aan een kop thee voor de kachel met een boek, dan is ‘Miss Buncle’s Book’ van D. E. Stevenson wel een van mijn favoriete keuzes.
Maar ik hou helemaal niet van donkere, depressieve boeken met gruwelijk geweld en eenzame dieren enzo. Boeken met gecompliceerde filosofieën die gepaard gaan met veel geklaag en gekreun. Ik begin dan al rap te knorren en te foeteren in trant van “wat een gezeur en t wordt tijd om op te groeien en volwassen te worden,etc”
Waar ik me wel helemaal aan kan overgeven, zijn boeken over koken, tuinieren, wooninrichting, breien, etc etc met prachtige foto’s en illustraties. Lekker bladeren en geïnspireerd en geactiveerd worden.
Mijn plan (zonder al te vast plan) is om omstebeurt een fictie en non-fictie boek kort te beschrijven. En natuurlijk hoor ik graag over andermans boekenkeuze en leesliefde!
