Every twenty years or so, the Arctic air reaches Cincinnati and so it did a few weeks ago. The world was beautiful!
Eens in the twintig jaar, bereikt de koude poollucht Cincinnati. Zo ook een paar week geleden. De wereld zag er prachtig uit!

With our sons visiting us, Mr. Poste having days of, the gorgeous winter weather…what more do you want?
Tjongejonge, wat een heerlijk, rustige Kersttijd was dat. Ik kon er maar niet genoeg van krijgen! Onze jongens op bezoek, Meneer Poste had vrije dagen, t heerlijke winterweer…wat wil je nog meer?
There was lots of reading and more crocheting.

Taarten bakken en dan opeten.
After being attacked earlier in the year, Charley stayed scared of other dogs. She went back to school and graduated with flying colors. Now she even plays with other dogs again!
Nadat Charley was aangevallen eerder dit jaar, bleef ze angstig naar andere honden. Ze ging terug naar school en slaagde met vlag en wimpel. Nu speelt ze zelfs weer met andere honden!
I was working hard to prepare for going back to school too…more about that later.
En ik werkte ook hard om weer terug naar school te gaan…meer daarover later.
And there was emergency knitting! More about that later too.
En breien voor een noodgeval was ook aan de orde! Ook daar meer over later.

Vrouwtje heeft mijn Kerstdeken te voorschijn gehaald. Dat betekent, dat ik moet oefenen met mijn ” mag-ik-astublieft-ook-wat-kalkoen’ blik!

Ohoh, what fun, unpacking all those Christmas decorations and getting nostalgic with memories. For instance, with this lovely Christmas Lady, a present from the Love of my Life, about 10 years ago. She always looks so happy in a winter breeze, so pretty and comfortable in her, what I imagine, is a velvet dress lined with (fake!) fur.
The red Dala horses my Love brought from Sweden and the blue one is a trift store find…oh, the joy of thrifting!
Oh jongens, wat heerlijk weer om al die kerstspulletjes uit te pakken, ik word helemaal nostalgisch! Van deze Kerstdame bijvoorbeeld, een cadeautje van zo’n 10 jaar terug van de lief van mijn leven. Ze ziet er altijd zo gelukkig uit in een winters briesje, zo mooi en behaaglijk in ,wat ik denk, is een fluwelen jurk met een (nep!) bont voering.
De rode Dala paardjes zij door mij lief meegebracht uit Zweden en de blauwe vond ik in de kringloop. Oh, de vreugde van t kringlopen!
And these Christmas stockings, I made for our first Christmas in Canada. The poinsettia has a button in the middle, I already found as a child and always kept in my button jar.
En deze kerstkousen heb ik gemaakt voor onze eerste Kerst in Canada. De kerstster heeft een knoop in t midden die ik als kind al gevonden had en altijd bewaarde in mijn knopenblik.
Ahw, and than this little fellow. My sisters and I each had our ‘own’ Christmas decorations and it was always a bit of bickering and secretly moving again, to get ‘our’ things in the best spot of the tree. I got this one when I was a little toddler in the late sixties. And my parents wrapped it carefully and send it along when my sisters came together for a visit in Canada in 2010. We always wonder what it is…what do you think?
Ach, en dan dit kleine ventje. Mijn zusters en ik hadden elk onze ‘eigen’ kerstversieringen en ‘t was altijd wat gekibbel en heimelijk weer verhangen, zodat ‘onze’ spulletjes de fraaiste plek in de boom kregen. Deze kreeg ik toen ik een kleine dreumes was, eind jaren zestig. Mijn ouders hadden t zorgvuldig verpakt en meegegeven met mijn zusters toen zij beiden voor een bezoek kwamen in Canada in 2010. We vragen ons altijd af wat t precies is…wat denk jij?

You start with collecting a few nice glass jars of different sizes and miniatures of trees, animals, snowflakes or whatever you think is pretty and Christmassy. You will also need white decor sand and nice glittery fake snow. Some people use epsom salt or even sugar, but I find that the sand gives more stability to the miniatures. And you will need some red and green felt , glue, sticky tape, thin wire etc.
Je begint met t verzamelen van wat mooie potjes in verschillende maten en miniaturen van bomen, dieren, sneeuwvlokjes en wat jij maar kerstelijk en mooi vindt. Ook heb je wit decor zand en fijne glitter nep sneeuw nodig. Sommige mensen gebruiken ook wel epsom zout of zelfs suiker maar ik vind dat t zand meer stabiliteit aan de miniaturen geeft. En dan heb je nog rood en groen vilt nodig en lijm, plakband, dun ijzerdraad etc.
First you cut out circles from the felt and glue it on the lid. Put a layer of the sand in the jar and place miniatures in it the way you like it. Using such pliers might be helpful.
Eerst knip je cirkels uit t vilt en plakt die op de deksel. Giet een laagje zand in de pot en plaats de miniaturen zoals jij t mooi vindt. T gebruiken van zo’n tangetje kan handig zijn.
To let items ‘float’ in the jars, simply wire them and stick it on the inside of the lid.
Om dingetjes te laten ‘zweven’, gewoon vastmaken aan dun ijzerdraad en aan de deksel plakken.
Sprinkle some fake snow on your little scene and screw the lid on. A little light behind the diorama makes it even more beautiful.
Strooi wat nepsneeuw over je kleine voorstelling en draai de deksel erop. Een klein lichtje achter je diorama maakt t nog mooier.
Mannikin thought that the felt on the lid looked a little sloppy. I corrected that and went a little overboard in making a few more;0)
Tekenpop vond dat t vilt wat slordig leek. Dat heb ik verbeterd en toen ging ik mezelf wat te buiten in t maken van nog een paar;0)

So I needed (really) I nice serving plate and I went to visit my favorite thrift stores. I could not believe my luck when I found this gorgeous pink depression glass plate with matching dipping bowl for only $6.-!!! And not a chip or a scratch on it! I started humming Christmas songs right away.
And than I saw the delightful peacock and that naughty mouse. And two vintage Pyrex bowls with my favorite Butterprint pattern! Aawh, and that little donkey…so perfect to hold my toothbrush! ( The candle holder is just to show the clever design of the peacock, it looks great on a bookshelf now)
Dus ik had nog een serveerschaal nodig ( echt waar) en ik ging maar eens op bezoek bij mijn favoriete kringloopwinkels. Ik kon mijn geluk niet op toen ik dit prachtige roze depressie glazen bord vond met bijpassend dipsaus schaaltje voor slechts $6,-!!! Geen krasje, niks! Ik begon gelijk kerstliedjes te neuriën. Ach en dat ezeltje…zo perfect voor mijn tandenborstel.
En toen vond ik die voortreffelijke pauw en dat ondeugende muisje en twee vintage Pyrex schalen met mijn favoriete Butterprint opdruk! ( De kandelaar is alleen maar om t slimme ontwerp van de pauw te laten zien, die staat nu zo mooi op een boekenplank)
And then I stumbled on these 1960 children books and ohoh those retro Dolphins were also singing softly to me….
En toen struikelde ik over deze kinderboeken uit 1960 en ohoh die retro dolfijnen zongen zo zachtjes naar mij….
Right…it was the last time this year, I was in the shops. It is getting too crowded with too many grumpy people for my taste;0) Time for reading.
Goed…dat was de laatste keer dat ik in de winkels was dit jaar. T wordt te vol met teveel chagrijnige mensen naar mijn smaak;0) Tijd om te lezen.
