Definition of DIORAMA according to merriam-webster.com:
- a scenic representation in which a partly translucent painting is seen from a distance through an opening
- a scenic representation in which sculptured figures and lifelike details are displayed usually in miniature so as to blend indistinguishably with a realistic painted background
- a life-size exhibit (as of a wildlife specimen or scene) with realistic natural surroundings and a painted background
You start with collecting a few nice glass jars of different sizes and miniatures of trees, animals, snowflakes or whatever you think is pretty and Christmassy. You will also need white decor sand and nice glittery fake snow. Some people use epsom salt or even sugar, but I find that the sand gives more stability to the miniatures. And you will need some red and green felt , glue, sticky tape, thin wire etc.
First you cut out circles from the felt and glue it on the lid. Put a layer of the sand in the jar and place miniatures in it the way you like it. Using such pliers might be helpful.
To let items ‘float’ in the jars, simply wire them and stick it on the inside of the lid.
Sprinkle some fake snow on your little scene and screw the lid on. A little light behind the diorama makes it even more beautiful.
Mannikin thought that the felt on the lid looked a little sloppy. I corrected that and went a little overboard in making a few more;0)
Love and Liefs, Johanna.
a great idea, i like them very much… plus old glass jars can be reused 😉
good job! love
Almost all is reused. It is amazing what can find in thrift stores etc. an once the lid is screwed on…it last forever;0)
now that’s my kind of craft. these are just lovely! 🙂
Thank you Geraldine. I like easy, fast projects too with dramatic results;0)
Wow, I have never seen this, very nice 🙂
Thank you Annie. It was a lot of fun making them and even more fun making photos of them;0)
How cute is that?!! 🙂
Even my sons and husband like them…so cute with a robust flavor?
Great idea. I have some jars that I saved in my cupboard that would work perfectly to make a diorama.
Thank you Sheryl, I think even your Grandma might have made them. Making dioramas was already very popular in Victorian times, a nice way to display the weird and wonderful without it getting dirty and damaged from soot and dust.
So delightful! I’m not good at crafts but I think I would like to make one of these, looks like such fun. Have a wonderful weekend! 🙂
Thanks Sheryl, would love to see what your diorama. And I hope your weekend was wonderful too!

These are delightful! But, I think if I made them, they wouldn’t look as good–you definitely have an eye for the whimsical that would be hard to rival! I love that bear stalking the sledder . . .
No need for rivalry and I am convinced after seeing your beautiful,Christmas stand that you are perfectly capable of making an excellent diorama. That bear was quite a handful indeed;0) A big hug for you for all your hard work!
